We have all seen footage on TV of the effects of fire on the countryside. In the right conditions a small fire will very quickly grow to engulf acres of rural land, destroying wildlife habitat or crops in the process. Many of these fires are due to deliberate fire setting, but just as many are caused by careless and thoughtless actions.
A lighted cigarette thrown from a passing car or train can lead to a farmer's whole year's work literally going up in smoke. Glass bottles left lying in grass or undergrowth can result in the devastation of local Surrey beauty spots.
These fires can burn for days or even weeks causing a severe drain on the resources of Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, tying up firefighters and equipment which should be available for life-saving duties elsewhere.
These fires could be prevented with just a little care and thought.
