Caravan safety

Any fire in a caravan will develop and spread very quickly, so it is vital that the closest attention is paid to preventing fire.

For maximum safety all appliances must be fixed. They should be connected to gas supplies by fixed pipework. The flexible connection to the gas bottle must be especially designed for such use. Our section on bottled gas gives further safety advice.

Portable appliances should be avoided as they:

  • May be knocked over as space is limited
  • May be placed too close to furniture etc, in the cramped conditions
  • May fall over if the caravan is rocked by high winds
Turn off appliances before going to bed or leaving the caravan for a long period. Equipment such as refrigerators are designed to be left running.

If a fire does occur it is essential to get early warning by detecting the fire. Fit and maintain at least one smoke alarm.
