Candles

In recent years candles have become almost a necessity in the home, due in no small part to the explosion of TV home make-over programmes, where they are promoted as a lifestyle accessory to improve the atmosphere and mood.
As a direct result of this, Surrey Fire and Rescue Service has found itself attending an increasing number of fires started by candles of all varieties. Tea lights have been a particular problem, causing the deaths of two people in the year 2000. Here are some simple precautions to take when using candles in the home.
- Buy them from a reputable retailer - many of those bought from a market stall will be substandard imports, which may have air bubbles inside (this may cause uncontrolled flaring when the candle burns down)
- Always use a proper candleholder and place on a non-flammable surface
- Do not try to stick a candle onto a saucer with dripping wax. It will probably fall over
- Place them well away from anything which may catch fire, such as: curtains, clothing, bedding, hair etc
- Keep them out of draughts
- Keep them out of reach of children and pets
- Do not leave a candle burning in a room which is unoccupied
- Do not allow anything (such as a match) to fall into the molten wax, as this will form a second wick which will increase the size of the flame
- Avoid moving a candle while it is alight
- Ensure all candles are completely extinguished before going to bed
