Types of work prohibited to children

Children of school age cannot:

  • Sell cigarettes or medicines
  • Be involved in gambling
  • Sell on the street
  • Sell door to door
  • Sell alcohol (except in sealed containers)
  • Collect or sort refuse
  • Use dangerous machinery
  • Delivering fuel oils
  • Delivering milk
  • Any work which is more than three metres above ground/floor level
  • Work involving exposure to adult material

And cannot work:

  • in a club
  • In a garage
  • in an amusement arcade or fairground
  • in a warehouse or factory
  • in a slaughterhouse or butchers
  • in a commercial kitchen
  • on a street
  • in a theatre, cinema or disco or television studio (unless licenced to perform there)
  • in telephone sales
  • in personal care of residents in any residential care home, or nursing home
  • No child may be employed in any work before 7am or after 7pm any day of the week
