Surrey Olympic volunteers wanted

Councillor Denise Saliagopoulos with an athlete and the Olympic torch.

Surrey County Council is calling for enthusiastic people to volunteer as Surrey Ambassadors when the Olympic cycle events and torch relay take place in the county.

More than a million people are expected to visit Surrey during the 2012 Games and up to 450 ambassadors are needed to welcome visitors and provide interesting and useful information about the local area.

Volunteers will be at key locations along the cycle route or at railway stations to give directions, provide information about the Olympic events, direct spectators to facilities and encourage them to visit local attractions and events taking place during and after the Games.

Ambassadors need to be 18 or over and be able to commit to at least two days of five hours, between 20 July 2012 and 1 August 2012.
Applications close on 31 January. For more information and to apply visit www.gosurrey.info

Denise Saliagopoulos, Surrey County Council's Cabinet Member for Community Services and the 2012 Games, said: "The Surrey Ambassador Scheme will not only enhance the spectator experience but also provide a unique opportunity for residents who want to get involved to play their part in the 2012 Games. It gives us a chance to promote local businesses and attractions and ensure tourists make the most of their visit to Surrey.

"Ambassadors will get invaluable experience working directly with the public on a high profile international event. They will meet people from all over the world, get a half-day of training, uniform and a certificate as a memento of their Surrey Ambassador experience."
