Hard-pressed families using cheap overnight electricity for their dishwashers are putting themselves at greater risk from fire.
With figures from national Electric Fire Safety Week (23 Jan – 29 Jan) revealing that every year 20,000 fires nationally are caused by faulty electrics, Surrey Fire and Rescue Service has warned that leaving appliances on unattended overnight to make use of cheaper electricity increases the chances of serious fires spreading.
Last year 260 house fires in Surrey alone were caused by faulty plugs, frayed wires or unattended items with dishwashers causing 22 incidents. Toasters, grills and electric blankets have all also sparked problems.
Surrey Fire and Rescue Officer Paul Otway said "With money tight many families are getting the washing done overnight on cheap electricity to save a few pence on their monthly bills but is it really worth the cost of seeing your home go up in smoke?"
"Leaving electrical equipment left unattended increases the likelihood of a small fault escalating into a life-threatening situation."
