P and G Surrey School Games athletics finals this weekend

Young athletes from across the county will compete in the Proctor and Gamble (P&G) Surrey School Games athletics finals this weekend.

More than 700 youngsters will attempt to run, jump and throw their way to glory on track and field, at Kingsmeadow Athletics Centre, in Kingston Road, Kingston, between 9 am and 6.30pm on Saturday, 11 June.

The P&G Surrey School Games is nearing the end of its 100 day programme of events which aims to get more children involved in sport during the build up to the 2012 Olympic Games. So far more than 2,000 young people from schools across the county have competed in events including badminton, football, mountain biking and hockey.

Denise Saliagopoulos, Surrey County Council's Cabinet Member for the Community Services and the 2012 Games, said: "We're encouraging as many young people as possible to take part in sport and the P&G Surrey School Games is a great way of doing this. Playing regular sport makes children healthier and teaches them that hard work and dedication can bring success. I hope these sporting events help nurture the next generation of Olympic hopefuls."

The P&G Surrey School Games has received the support of English Olympic badminton medalist Gail Emms who said: "I'm delighted to support the P&G Surrey School Games because I think most people's love of sport started at school. I loved playing all sports at school. I was in all different sports teams and it taught me if you put the hard work in you will get rewarded with great results. I can't praise the importance of school sport enough."

Children from schools across the whole of Surrey will be taking part as well as youngsters from Croydon, Merton and Kingston.
