Guildford

Henley Fort sits atop The Mount in the Guildford and boasts stunning panoramic views across the sprawling Surrey countryside. From the centre, we also venture out to make use of local settings on the River Wey, thus offering a wider variety of outdoor experiences.

The fort has a rich history and was originally built in the 1880s as one of the London Defence Positions to defend the capital against invasion by the French. Later, it was used during the Second World War as head quarters for the Surrey Home Guard.

Today, Henley Fort is a unique space for learning and self-discovery in the natural environment.

Home Front 1940 (a living history experience)

Home Front 1940 is an exciting living history experience that offers KS2 students a practical insight into the lives of those who lived during WW2. This unique outdoor learning experience also teaches students about how the Second World War has shaped Surrey's local heritage.

What happens during Home Front 1940 sessions?

On the day, students are provided with authentic uniforms and take on the roles of the Surrey Home Guard volunteers and Air Raid Wardens. Students will have the opportunity to take on both roles during the day.

Air Raid Wardens will experience what it was like during an air raid in an authentic Anderson shelter and learn about gas masks, blackout and how to fight fires with fire-fighting equipment of the day.

Home Guard volunteers will hunt for sneaky spies, undergo training drills, master the art of disguise in camouflage constructions and much more!
