Special educational needs policy and practice in Surrey

We have a wide range of information covering special educational needs (SEN) in Surrey. We strongly believe in consultation with children and young people, parents and carers when we judge how well our arrangements are working for pupils who have SEN. Our current approach is to be found in the SEN Strategy 2010-2014.

Surrey believes that children with SEN should be included in their local mainstream school whenever possible. Currently, a large percentage of children with SEN are educated in Surrey mainstream schools. For more details see: Special educational needs and the countywide approach to education.

Surrey promotes early identification and intervention of SEN. This means that it supports teachers and workers in early years settings as well as schools to make special arrangements as soon as they notice that a child or young person is experiencing difficulties in accessing the curriculum. The latest initiative called 'Improving Intervention in SEN' started in April 2006.
