For entry to infant or primary (reception) and junior (year 3) you need to apply by the 15 January preceding the September that your child would start at the school.
For entry to secondary school (year 7) you need to apply by 31 October preceding the September that your child would start at the school.
For entry to school at any other time you need to complete an In Year Application Form.
In Surrey, children are able to start school in the September after their fourth birthday and parents can request that they start on a part-time or full-time basis.
If you do not wish to send your child to school until they reach statutory school age (the beginning of the academic term immediately following their fifth birthday), you must still apply for a school place in reception by the given deadline, even if you do not intend to take up the place immediately in September.
Please note: Offers of school places in reception classes must be taken up within the academic year. This means that if your child is four between 1 April 2012 and 31 August 2012 you would have to take up your offer of a school place at the start of the summer term 2013, in order to retain your offer of a school place.
If you wish to defer entry you should speak to the head teachers of the schools to which you are applying before the January deadline.
If your child has a current statement of special educational needs, you will be sent information at the beginning of the autumn term in which your application needs to be made, explaining how to apply for a school place. If you have any questions about this, please contact your child's case officer at your local area office.
Further information for parents and carers whose children will be starting primary school at the beginning of the next school year can be found in Surrey Family Information Service's Thinking About School booklet.
