Legal duties of the Admissions and Transport Team

The Admissions and Transport Team at Surrey County Council has a legal obligation to undertake the following.

  • To provide school places for every Surrey child who wants one.
  • To consult annually on school admissions arrangements.
  • To coordinate primary and secondary school admissions.
  • To assess entitlement for free home to school transport.

Please be aware that you do not have a right to choose which school your child will go to. You only have a right to express a preference for a school. Our ability to satisfy your preferences will depend not only on the demand for places at individual schools but also on the total number of school places available in the area.

The fact that you name a school on your preference form does not automatically mean that you child is entitled to a place there. If a school is oversubscribed, the admissions criteria explained in the Information for Parents booklets for primary and secondary education will be used to work out which pupils will be offered places.

The booklets also detail the admissions procedures for children with a current statement of special educational needs and parents' right to appeal against a decision not to offer a place at one or more of your preferred schools.

Parents may also find it helpful to look at the guidance on applying for a school place on direct.gov.uk, the website of the UK government.

Further information on the School Admissions Code which came into force on 1 February 2012 can be found on the Department for Education website.
