Van and trailer permit scheme

van permit graphic

What is the van and trailer permit scheme?

You now need a permit number to access any of the community recycling centres in Surrey if you drive -

  • A van
  • A pickup
  • Or pull a trailer

For the purpose of the permit scheme, a van is -

  • Any vehicle without side rear windows
  • Any flatback vehicle
  • Any pickup vehicle (two seater or four seater)

The waste permit is a unique reference number attached to your vehicle registration. When you visit the site, staff will validate your permit and record the waste and recycling you have brought.

  • Permits are for the disposal or recycling of your own household waste only
  • Permits are not issued for the disposal of trade waste or trade recycling
  • Businesses must use one of the four waste transfer stations where waste and recycling can be weighed and paid for
  • Permit usage will be monitored
  • Permitted vehicles cannot bring construction waste to the site
  • Only residents living in one of the 11 Surrey districts or boroughs are able to apply for a permit
  • Only one permit will be issued per household

Construction Waste Policy

Surrey County Council does not allow construction waste to be brought to the sites in vans, pickups or trailers. This type of waste may only be brought to the site in a car. Please refer to our construction waste page to find out why Surrey County Council restrict this type of waste.

Construction waste includes, but is not limited to -

  • Rubble, bricks and concrete
  • Earth, soils including turfs
  • Bathroom suites i.e. baths, sinks and toilets
  • Fitted kitchen cupboards and work surfaces
  • Plasterboard and room partitions (plasterboard is only accepted at Camberley, Earlswood, Epsom, Guildford, Sunbury and Woking)
  • Garden sheds
  • Fence panels and posts
  • Internal and external doors
  • Radiators
  • Garden stone (paving and ornamental)
  • Tiles
  • Fitted units
  • Rigid plastic sheeting or roofing
  • Roofing materials
  • Insulation
  • Flooring

Why have we introduced a van and trailer permit scheme?

Surrey Community Recycling Centres (CRCs) are for household waste only. The permit scheme is to prevent trade waste from entering the household sites.

As businesses mostly use commercial type vehicles and large trailers to move waste around, these vehicles and trailers will need permits. This will mean residents who drive this type of vehicle and have a valid permit can still deposit their own household waste, but businesses will be kept out.

To set you up with your permit number we need to take some personal details. We need these to ensure only residents with their own household waste obtain a permit. Your details will only be used in the operation of the scheme and will not be passed to anyone else. From time to time we may contact you with updates and to obtain feedback. We may also need to validate your details to ensure they are correct.
