Horse Pasture Management calendar cover 2012

Below is a list of contents to help you move within the page

Introduction

In order to assist Surrey's horse-keepers in achieving economically, environmentally and ecologically sustainable ways of managing and utilising manure, this database has been established. Similarly, the database will be of benefit to anyone wanting to source a local supply of compost material. It is intended to provide a link to connect people who are keen to use manure as a valuable compost material, with horse keepers who have quantities of manure to dispose of. Ideally, the database will allow manure to be used as near as possible to the site of production to minimise transport impacts. It is not acceptable to dispose of manure in landfill and it is a Government directive that landfill sites primarily be used for non-biodegradable waste. Manure has a potential value and its disposal through landfill is both profligate and unnecessary. Other undesirable practices which impact negatively on the landscape and environment include open burning, fly tipping, unmanaged heaps situated in inappropriate areas, over application to land etc.

The management of manure must be viewed as a fundamental element in the overall care and management of horses.

If everyone accountable for handling and disposing of horse manure in Surrey adopted this attitude, a quantity in the region of 180,000 tonnes of manure could be utilised as a valuable natural resource in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way!

Please also refer to the Manure storage and disposal and Manure regulations, handling and composting advice pages and the Project Disclaimer.

Manure Available in Surrey

If you would like to place an advert here, please contact the Project. Don't forget to contact the Project again if you want to request the removal of your advert.

Most stable yards are happy to accommodate people who want to fill and remove a few sacks of manure as well as people wishing to make larger collections. The manure supplies detailed below are all available free of charge but if neither party has transport available, a transportation cost may arise. The use of manure as a compost material is likely to benefit both the horse-keeper - who needs to dispose of the manure - and the compost user - who will receive an excellent source of fertiliser - so it may be worth negotiating to share the transportation costs.

If you arrange to meet a horse-keeper to collect manure from their stables at a specific time, please notify the horse-keeeper if your plans change and you are no longer able to attend.
