This major conference was organised under the UK Presidency of the European Union by Surrey County Council on behalf of the South East England region, a founder member of the PURPLE (Peri-Urban Regions Platform Europe) network as part of the PURPLE programme.
2005 is the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the Green Belt in the United Kingdom. Delegates from 11 European regions joined this conference to review lessons learnt in Green Belt and other peri-urban areas across Europe and to consider how a sustainable and multi-functional countryside can be maintained in the future around Europe's cities and towns.
