Exploring Chalk Grassland

common spotted orchid

We are now in our sixth final Heritage Lottery Funded year of the Old Surrey Downs Project and we are working hard to finish our comprehensive programme of chalk grassland restoration work across Surrey and South London.

We have had an extremely busy spring/summer attending lots of public events with our exhibition trailer, outreaching to lots of communities.

This includes a very successful day parked up on the main concourse at London Victoria's BR station in May, promoting our conservation work, volunteering opportunities and our extensive selection of self guided walk leaflets. We were very well received and handed out hundreds of leaflets and promotional items.

The last few copies of our popular spring/summer 2011 edition of our project magazine, 'Chalk Talk' are still available. Please call us on 01737 733933 to get your free copy. The issue is packed full of project news, plus interesting facts about the flora and fauna of our beautiful chalk grassland. It also includes a map showing the location of where the key 25 chalk grassland sites that we have been restoring are to be found in this area. Also find out more about our volunteering opportunities and how you could get involved, including team building days for corporate groups and ideas for school groups.

The new autumn/winter issue will be published around late November - watch this space for further updates.

We have also recently produced a special chalk grassland species ID keyring, perfect for using when visiting your local chalk grassland patch. If you would like a free keyring along with any of our free walk leaflets, then please do not hesitate to contact us.

The latest addition to our walks portfolio is the Dorking to Gomshall walk which is a 7 mile 'station to station' walk through some of the finest chalk grassland in Surrey. Call us on the number above if you would like a copy.

Why not get out and explore your lovely local chalk grassland sites this weekend? A countryside stroll is great for health and well-being and you can enjoy the beautiful surroundings for free!

We look forward to hearing from you soon.
