It is a statutory obligation for all LAs to review their Agreed Syllabus for RE every five years (Education Act 1993). On 24 April 2007 the Executive Committee of Surrey County Council adopted a New Agreed Syllabus to replace the existing 2002 RE Syllabus. The New Agreed Syllabus therefore becomes the statutory RE syllabus for all Surrey Maintained and Voluntary Controlled schools when it is officially launched on 2 October 2007.

Surrey SACRE has agreed that with regard to OfSTED inspections, the date for full implementation of the Agreed Syllabus will be 1 January 2008.

The New Agreed Syllabus builds upon the strengths of the 2002 syllabus which has done much to raise the profile of RE throughout Surrey. However, the new syllabus contains more help and guidance for non specialist teachers at Foundation Stage and at Key Stages 1-2 with:

New level descriptors for RE, based on the non statutory National Framework for RE
Learning outcomes relating to these new levels

The entire document is now available on the Four S website for download in word format. This can be found on www.fours.co.uk . Detailed lesson plans to accompany the new syllabus at Foundation Stage and Key Stages 1-2 have been written and will be available shortly on the website for schools to download. Schools will be notified as soon as these are available. The lesson plans are non-statutory and are for guidance and support only.

Diary Date - The launch will be on 2 October 2007 from 4.30 – 6.30 p.m. (venue and further details about booking to be advised)

Schools will be able to pick up a copy of the New Agreed Syllabus at the launch.

Details of entitlement training for all Primary RE co-ordinators and Secondary Heads of RE will be circulated at the beginning of the Autumn term
