Domestic Abuse represents one quarter of all violent crime. It is actual or threatened physical, emotional, psychological or sexual abuse. It involves the use of power and control by one person over another. It occurs regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, class, sexuality, age, religion, mental or physical ability.
In Surrey, we use the term domestic abuse, to reflect that a number of abusive and controlling behaviours are involved beyond violence. Other areas still use the term domestic violence but the agenda remains the same.
Slapping, punching, kicking, bruising, rape, ridicule, constant criticism, threats, manipulation, sleep deprivation, social isolation, denying access to money and other controlling behaviours all count as abuse.
