Young people and smoking

Trading Standards takes a very hard line against the sale of tobacco to young people. We are very concerned about the effects that smoking can have, especially on young people.

To combat the sale of tobacco to underage teenagers we need the help of other teenagers, who attempt to buy cigarettes while being observed by a Trading Standards officer. If a purchase is made the retailer is cautioned or taken to court.

Facts about smoking

  • 22% of all male deaths and 11% of all female deaths are due to smoking.
  • As teenagers it is never too late to give up. Giving up now can reduce the risk of developing many smoking related illnesses.
  • Within 10-15 years of giving up, an ex-smokers' risk of developing lung cancer is only slightly greater than someone who has never smoked.
  • If you smoke twenty cigarettes a day you will spend £31,025 over the next 20 years at todays prices. You could have purchased the latest mobile phones, music systems, cars, holidays, a better home and possessions, given your children a better life or even built up some savings.

Before your next smoke, imagine:

  • people looking at you in disgust in public places
  • not being able to do without a regular puff
  • turning members of the opposite sex off with smelly breath, hair and clothes, not to mention stained fingers and teeth
  • that ever present feeling that you should give up for your own sake
  • the thought that you could be affecting other peoples health around you, maybe a younger brother or sister.
