Petroleum

Trading Standards are the petroleum licensing authority in Surrey and we are responsible for ensuring safety at sites where petrol is delivered, stored and dispensed.

What are the conditions related to obtaining a Petroleum licence?

Petrol must be stored in accordance with certain conditions attached to a licence that we issue and our aim is to ensure the observance, maintenance and, where necessary, the improvement of safety standards.

Before applying for a licence please study our Model licensing conditions.

How do I apply for a licence?

You can apply and pay for a new petroleum storage licence, renewchange or transfer your existing petroleum storage licence all online, via the Gov.uk website.

How much does the licence cost?

The cost of a Petroleum licence is dependant on the quantity that will be stored.

  • Exceeding 50,000 litres - £120.
  • Between 2,500 litres and 50,000 litres - £58.
  • Up to 2,500 litres - £42.
  • The cost to change or transfer an existing licence is £8.
  • The cost to obtain a replacement copy of an existing Petroleum licence is £20 (plus VAT).
  • The cost of a Site search is £126 (plus VAT) where we have information or £53 (plus VAT) where we have no information.
