Construction and demolition waste consists of all waste originating from construction, renovation and demolition activities, such as rubble, bricks and tiles.
The building, construction and demolition industry is one of the largest producers of waste in England. Construction and demolition waste can be further broken down into the following:
Funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA), SMEs in the South East of England that provide services within the construction industry are being offered free assistance to improve their waste management performance and skills.
For more information and to apply for this support please download the leaflet at the foot of this page.
Websites are being designed to give the construction industry the opportunity to either post, exchange or purchase excess building waste materials, that otherwise would be destined for landfill.
One website called SECBE was set up to provide a service that can bring together construction procurement professionals to significantly reduce waste, benefiting both the environment and the economy. The website aims to facilitate the resale of construction related materials.
BRE's Centre for Resource Efficiencyhelps construction industry professionals make informed decisions on waste management policies and practices, by raising awareness of what wastes are likely to occur, the waste management options available, and the legal requirements for those options.
If you want to benchmark, audit, manage and reduce waste on site you can contact them via the SMARTWastewebsite.
A new waste portal has been set up in the South East to assist the Building and Construction Industry deal with their waste issues. SECBE stands for South East Centre for the Built Environment and the website will provide useful information and advice. For example: Is your company aware of the new legislation on SWMPs that came into effect on April 06 2008?
All construction projects over £300,000 will be subject to this new legislation. For more detailed information on this, as well as other useful information please visit the SECBEwebsite.
The Netregs website carries detailed information on the recent SWMP legislation or you can download a copy of the 'Site waste - it's criminal'guide.
